Recently, I’ve talked about our strategic planning process and the top five priorities. Last week, we announced that we’re taking the initiative to help with the expansion of daycare spaces in Lanigan in partnership with the local Daycare Board, which is very exciting for the future of our community. I really feel this is a win-win for our community.
Residential development is also one of our top five priorities and we recently reviewed a residential prospectus that outlines everything we’ve been doing over the past year, what we are currently doing and what needs to be done to promote residential development. We have vacant serviced lots for new dwelling development, and we also have subdivided unserviced lots that will require some infrastructure investment. We have rezoned some parcels of land for multiple family residential development and will be developing concept plans for the actual development of these parcels in 2025. Lanigan is sitting in a good position for residential growth.
As part of our membership with MSMA (Mid Sask Municipal Alliance), we are working on setting up a housing cooperative. This initiative is funded through CMHC. Stay tuned for more details as we navigate through the process.
We have a competitive property tax incentive policy in place for new residential development, and the residential lot prices are most certainly very competitive. As for marketing our community, we know that interest is growing with what we are currently doing and what we have been doing over the past year, and we intend to step things up a notch through our Thrive in Lanigan website, increased communication and other advertising tools that we are working on through the 2025 budget.
We are pleased to see 6 new dwellings in Lanigan during 2024 (five new modular homes and one new conventional dwelling). With the discussions we are having with builders and developers, we forecast the potential of another 20+ new dwellings in Lanigan in 2025. The trickle of growth started in 2024, and our objective is to see that trickle turn into a manageable stream over the next five years.
The council and I, with the help of our town team, are committed to moving forward with initiatives we have set as the top five priorities in the first quarter of 2025. Stay tuned as I look forward to providing you with updates as we move forward. As always, we are open to discussing and listening to any ideas you have.
Regards,
- Mayor Tony Mycock
