Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by a 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Today, more than a century later, the Knights of Columbus has become the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church.

As the Order has grown, its benevolence has multiplied. The Order continues to break all previous records for charitable contributions and volunteer service. In the past decade, the Knights donated nearly $1 billion to numerous charitable causes and nearly 400 million hours of volunteer service. In 1999 alone, the Knights donated nearly $109 million and 55 million volunteer hours to charitable causes

Some of our clubs past projects included purchasing the P.A. system for the local Arena, Arena/Hall fundraisers, Monday night weekly bingos, sponsoring the annual Bantam Hockey Tournament, Smokie on a Bun and evening suppers at the Lanigan Sports Days.

Royal Canadian Legion #143

The Royal Canadian Legion is a non profit, self sustained organization with more than 1,600 branches in Canada, the United States, and Germany.

Most Canadians associate the Legion with Remembrance ceremonies and activities perpetuating the memory of those who died in the two world wars, the Korean War and other Canadian military missions, including peacekeeping. Probably the most widely known activity is the National Remembrance-Poppy Campaign in which Legion members and friends distribute poppy emblems for donations to raise money for needy veterans, ex-service members, and their families. On Remembrance Day, November 11, the Legion also holds memorial services in communities across Canada. As the Legion moves into the 21st century, its members have rededicated themselves to ensure the care of Canada’s veterans and the perpetuation of remembrance.

Fundraising activities include various Memorial Funds, Rescue Equipment Fund, local sporting events, etc. As well every year one student is sent to a Royal Canadian Legion Track & Field event.

There is a lot of history to the organization and anyone interested is invited to contact any of the 64 existing members for further information.
